2007

Tous mes voeux de succès et de bonheur pour 2007.

C’est peut-être l’occasion de méditer ce propos de Margot Wallström, vice-présidente de la Commission européenne, sur son blog :

The older I get – the less I am sure about knowing all the answers. The “higher-up” in my career – the more I need to be anchored in something practical/pragmatic. The more political responsibility I assume – the less I long to be in the spotlight……

Protecting the internet from privatization

There’s an old article by Bill Gates somewhere (an e-mail to Dave Winer if memory serves) where he doesn’t believe attempts to own the internet are likely to succeed. This doesn’t prevent a lot of people from trying, including some parts of Microsoft, probably. The candidate du jour are the telecom companies, since they own the pipes.

Susan Crawford has an interesting post on the subject. May I add that this discussion cannot stay on purely US-centric grounds (we’re not in 1995 anymore) and that what Susan describes as more important than some private interests is very near to what some European countries would call a public service?

WEAPONS: The RFID zapper

Inject your RFID tags now!Via John Robb:

The intentional disabling of these chips can cause supply chain disruption. The best method is to HERF (high energy radio frequency, usually microwaves) the chips using a small transmitter (read more about home made microwave weapons or herfing). The German branch (privacy activists) of the global guerrilla innovation network has developed a simple solution that converts a standard film camera into a short range RFID zapper.

News aggregator by feed priority?

I’m looking for a news aggregator with the following features:

  • feed priority. Face it, some blogs are high priority and I should read every post. others are nice to have in my reading list, but I won’t die if I don’t have time to read them.
  • sophistication of the preceding feature : analysis of my reading habits to define priorities. I believe all work on antispamming tools could be leveraged here.

Given the time I have wasted with my “blogroll activity” feature in the sidebar, I believe there’s an artificial distinction between aggregators and blogging platforms. My aggregator has everything to gain from being public. You could even add your own feeds to it.

Maybe we’ll get this from the 2006 microbubble, which should be about attention. Or maybe that’s what Dave is working on (newsRiver.root)?
